Six awards were presented by the Thomson Foundation in New Delhi on November 30, recognising outstanding achievement in the coverage of the HIV/AIDS in India. The awards went to the following journalists:
1. Mohuya Chaudhuri for “AIDS under the Arclights”, a programme on NDTV that made an in-depth examination of exploitation and exposure to HIV in the Chennai film industry.
2. Bharati Ghanashyam for her article “Whither messaging?”, which investigated the effectiveness of health communication. The report focused on attitudes and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.
3. Biju Mathew, from All India Radio, Trivandrum, for his entry “One Among Us” - a hard-hitting expose of HIV/AIDS victims being denied medical care.
4. S. Nagarathinam from the Dinamalar newspaper in Madurai, who produced a special page holding the health system accountable for lack of diagnostic and treatment facilities for people living with HIV/AIDS.
5. Sanjeev Sharma, from All India Radio, Jammu, for his radio programme “Isse Pehle ki Andhera Ho (Before Darkness Descends)” on the lives of people living with HIV/AIDS in rural areas.
6. Rajeet Ranjan Sinha for his programme “Main Jeena Chahta Hoon (I Want to Live)” on Zee News, in which he looked at the issue of provision of AIDS drugs through the eyes of one man.
Every year, the awards reward excellence in the reporting of HIV/AIDS in India, and try to raise awareness about the Foundation’s Media Manual on HIV/AIDS which lists guidelines about recommended journalism practices.
The awards have been instituted under the EU-India Media Initiative on HIV/AIDS, which is a media project being implemented by The Thomson Foundation with the financial assistance of the European Union.
